Northern Cape police spokesperson Brigadier Mohale Ramatseba said the suspects were arrested in two separate incidents.
“In the first incident, members of the Springbok Stock Theft and Endangered Species unit, under the command of Detective Captain Karel du Toit, arrested two suspects on Sunday, December 20 for being in possession of 2,464 conophytum pageae and 900 conophytum pellucidum plants worth R400,000. The two suspects, aged 25 and 27, were arrested in a joint operation comprising the Springbok Stock Theft and Endangered Species unit, the Namakwa Crime Intelligence unit and the Springbok K9 unit. Both suspects are expected to appear in the Springbok Magistrate’s Court on December 22,” said Ramatseba.
He added that another suspect was apprehended after being found in possession of protected plants worth R100,000.
“In another joint operation comprising the Springbok Stock Theft and Endangered Species unit, Crime Intelligence and the Springbok K9 unit, a 35-year-old man was arrested for being in possession of protected conophytum flavum plants valued at R100,000. The suspect was also arrested on December 20 and will appear in the local magistrate’s court on December 22.
“Police investigations continue,” Ramatseba said.
